Whatever You Want is an exploration of authority and how it manifests in the body when it is willingly stripped from an individual.
Through a series of pre-generated commands along with those elicited by a live and digital audience, Escarciga will experiment with modes of giving and taking power as the performance plays out in real time, manipulating his body in response to lived circumstances. Informed by a background in Butoh and survival mechanisms as a queer person living with mental illness, Whatever You Want is a glimpse into the daily life of those living on the fringe.
About Shawn Escarciga
Shawn Escarciga (Brooklyn, NY, USA) is an “experimental” “performance” “artist” whose work is based in explorations of gender, class, and trauma. His practice is informed by his background in Butoh, experimental text, and a penchant for prancing to pop music in jockstraps. He shows work regularly throughout New York City, across the United States, and internationally, as well as teaching movement workshops in both dance studio and university settings. He thinks a lot about classism, queer visibility, how to light patriarchal structures on fire effectively, intimacy, and what it would be like to live in a country that supports non-commercial artists which might look something like eating 2000 calories regularly and owning a Shiba.
