What is it to be bound and caged and yet concealed?
Its true nature ambiguous to those who can only see the surface of its reality.
It hints its presence, it breaks the surface.
In struggle there is an attempt to reveal, to remove, to be set free.
Breathe.
Resisting, catching, pulling, it penetrates as it tears.
Constricted by wild nature, by memory and loss; both of equal force and poetic trauma.
The body as site and the eyes of the skin, pricked and punctured, wounded in process.
On the outsides looking inward, gained by the moment, in its intensity and darkness.
In contemplation and dialogue through a delicate yet intense action.
Discomfort yet understanding in relation to infliction.
Proposing that we must assure the autonomy in owning our own truths; which may break the surface but are hidden either through oppression or by deceit.
Enforcing resistance to the lies which mask the truth.

Whatever You Want is an exploration of authority and how it manifests in the body when it is willingly stripped from an individual.

Through a series of pre-generated commands along with those elicited by a live and digital audience, Escarciga will experiment with modes of giving and taking power as the performance plays out in real time, manipulating his body in response to lived circumstances. Informed by a background in Butoh and survival mechanisms as a queer person living with mental illness, Whatever You Want is a glimpse into the daily life of those living on the fringe.

Tempting Failure 2018

Photographer: Julia Bauer

luxul’s performances utilise an electric viola, a smorgasbord of effects pedals and the artist’s voice to create a meditative, cacophonous and often chaotic output that is ritualistic and primal.

One of the key underlying principles of the whole endeavour is that nothing is utilised as it should be. The viola is beaten, scratched, abused but seldom ever “played”. It serves frequently simply as a microphone to amplify a voice which is screamed, roared and growled. Each performance is improvised and created from scratch often with minimal forethought, relying primarily on the feel of the moment and atmosphere of the location.

Everything in this project is built around the artist’s personal experience with chronic pain and an ever-failing body. The viola becomes a sort of voodoo doll that she attempts to pass her suffering on to. The releasing of pain into the viola-as-an-object allows for the cathartic release needed to transcend the current physical state and to dwell out of reach of the concerns of the flesh.

Trauma is an individual experience yet manifests similarly in our bodies often challenging the simplest of tasks. Contending with our trauma is performed in the artwork, the burden of this, by walking while dragging the artist's own body weight in manure. This performance is conducted in public areas as an example of how we always grapple with our trauma, no matter the place or circumstance. Throughout the performance, the artist fights the abject body as she tries to manoeuvre the public sphere.

As a response to societal pressures to be functional when neurodiverse and consequently the process of therapy for mental disorders, Crystalline questions adaptive and maladaptive trait definitions.

In an environment where the value of a person is entwined with productivity and permitted mindsets are homogenised to fit within a capitalist framework therapy can be a sanctuary; a release from life-altering attributes and an opportunity to become a part of a world that was previously inaccessible. However, are these attributes deemed inherently negative due to their counter-productivity worthy of such deep personal change? Relief from the pains of mental disorders is paramount but who decides the benchmark of recovery?

A naked white body hanging in the void…with water dripping and penetrating its skin like a Japanese torture … washing everything away … revealing its true nature … waiting to be loved… with only the sound of dripping water and an audience walking through it, becoming one with this boy …

This Boy Needs Love is an endurance performance/installation that investigates and questions the paradox of aesthetics and pain in the search for a new beauty. The duration of this piece depends on the physical endurance of the performer’s body at the time.

Coming from a place of personal contemplation, Hall uses improvisational performance as a form of exploring a series of sensory and social gestures in relation to questions regarding their role as Autos (Greek ‘Self’) and how they affect, and are affected, by the world around them. In AUTOS/FLECTIONS, Hall delves deeper into a series of gestures that they have touched on over the last year, such as the recorded voice, the use of surface reflections in glass and the intimate action of kissing as a means of exploring personal contemplations.

Potentially touching on their thoughts and observations of being on the autistic spectrum, exploring their queerness in relation to sexuality and gender and the influence of performance art as a method of processing, they also make reference to allegorical frameworks such as the myth of Narcissus and Echo as a method of holding reign of the tangential nature of Hall’s improvisational mode of performance.

Scars is a performance that talks about the fat body and the discrimination with which it faces. The elements shown are related to the metaphor of the empowerment of our bodies and the constant struggle against the stereotypes of beauty to which corporal dissidents rebel.

Scars is an encounter between the pain of the fractured body and also the joy and liberation of it, is to remove the stigma that a dissident body is an ugly, useless and disposable body.

Erika was unable to travel to Tempting Failure so performed this work in Mexico and live streamed it to TF18.

If I scream into a mirror will I become all I wish to be, or will I remain a monster?

An opportunity to watch a desperate act of self-care made manifest, reflected and refracted back.
Perhaps you will see yourself as you really are. Or perhaps you will merely turn to stone.
Fragmented reality (+) vs. the one true narrative (-). After all, the truth can only found in YOUR mind.

Pull back the turf and you will find my bones. Resting in peaty Pennine earth, I find some measure of peace.

Buffeted by fierce wind, made wet by heavy sheets of rain, caught on barbed fences, I am exposed and free. Up here grief makes sense. Up here I feel again.

I yearn for this sensation, dream of it, fantasize about it. Through L’Ariete I am navigating an experience of dislocation, of loss, of grief. Materials are at once metaphors for this experience and, simultaneously, fragments of it. The figure of the Ram is a totem, a memory. The bones are stand ins for the bones I cannot reach.

In working with this figure, in identifying with it, and attempting to become it, I am trying to mend a wound, to stitch myself up. Acts of endurance and mortification both mark this experience and offer a map through which to navigate it. I dream of being made strong by these rites.

The EYE OF THE RIB is a multidisciplinary performance, that involves projection, sound, tape recording, live reading and ritualistic gestures.

The performer butchers a lamb with a variety of surgical tools, while reading a text in dialogue with a pre-recorded tape.

The writings deal with themes of trauma, desire and violence, through a combination of personal narratives, historical facts and academic quotes. The result is a fragmented dialogue, that accompanies the viewers through states of confusion, repulsion and attraction.

Felt (1)

A kind of cloth made by rolling and pressing wool or another suitable textile accompanied by the application of moisture or heat, which causes the constituent fibres to mat together to create a smooth surface. - Oxford English Dictionaries (2018)

Something about the sea.

A general muddle of yearning and un-belonging.
Heading north.

A selkie is a seal creature found from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, through the Faroes and up to the high arctic of the Nordic countries. The selkie sheds their skin on land to appear in a human likeness. Only by means of the skin may they return to the water.

Braithwaite Hall and David Lean Cinema, Croydon
Photographer: Thomas John Bacon

We are honoured to showcase a rare retrospective of works from the archive of Hermann Nitsch ahead of his 80th birthday on 29th August 2018.

This legendary artist granted TF18 permission to screen a selection of pieces chosen by Hermann Nitsch himself and our artistic director, Dr. Thomas John Bacon for the festival.

A founder of the short-lived and yet continually relevant, shocking, and infamously impactful, Viennese Actionists, Hermann Nitsch’s influence continues to touch all of performance art still today. His Orgien Mysterien Theater aktions, often involve slaughter, butchery, religious sacrifices, crucifixion, as well as noise, dance, celebration, ritual and rapture. The viewing experience on film is no less impactful and creates beautifully shocking imagery that holds its audience in a world full of question and wonder.

Each aktion will be screened only once; shown in full and uncut.

Tempting Failure 2018
Braithwaite Hall, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

Hitting women, then, becomes the physical expression of men’s re-worked gender habitus, forged through the shared histories of men and women learning how to fight together, and therein learning to engage with one another outside of the bounds of typical, patriarchal gender norms.” - Alex Channon, Do You Hit Girls? Some Striking Moments in the Career of a Male Martial Artist

In Do You Hit Girls? Penelope Koliopoulou will invite a male opponent to a long Thai-Boxing fighting performance. An aggressive fight, between two people of similar weight and similar training experience. She will take the fight out of its normal space -the gym- and into an art event.

With this durational performance she wishes to raise questions relating to consent, boundaries and sex segregation in sports. She wants to challenge the social taboo of violence against women, by adding the factors of consent, sport’s rules, and a predetermined time and space for it to happen.

This is a real fight that engages real issues.

Lizzie Masterton - ASMR: Tools For Tenderness

Tempting Failure 2018
Braithwaite Hall, Croydon
Photographer Julia Bauer

ASMR: Tools for Tenderness is a participatory talk exploring the physiological and psychological tingling sensation of ASMR, its potential for healing fractures in the relationship between the mind and body, as well as promoting a sense of wellbeing.

The talk will explore: the emotional and biocapital labour of feminine presenting people within ASMR videos, the construction of gender, race, and the posthuman embodied subject within ASMR, and the potential for ASMR to be used as a therapeutic tool for those coping with depression, anxiety, depersonalisation, PTSD and other mental health problems.

Whilst this lecture hopes to introduce the audience to the sensual world of ASMR, it is also to be enjoyed as a live ASMR experience in itself.

Turf Projects, Croydon

A woman walks alone in a red skirt, each step is marked by a blood trail left behind her, painting a bloody path which encircles the space. Through the trajectory, a boundary of blood is created around the gallery building.

Amy Kingsmill presents Bleeding Skirt, her new durational piece, a meditation on bleeding women and bleeding as a woman. This ritualistic performance is both deceptively simple and radically ambitious- exploring concerns around public space as a contested space for women to exist in safely.

Tempting Failure 2018
Turf Projects, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

Nathaniel’s work is concerned with the exploration of identity, masculinity, and sexuality, especially in relation to memory, domesticity, and historical traditions of Southern Americana.

In Papaw Passing Time, the artist attempts to build a connection with his past. Solving a jigsaw puzzle from start to finish, while drinking his grandfather's homemade wine. An act of passing time. A simple task from childhood, that was repeated everyday. Embodying the role of the grandparent, sitting at the head of the dining room table. A daily ritual that seemed to be an act of waiting. Waiting to finish. Waiting for death. Just passing time.

The artist invites you to sit with him during this seemingly mundane task. Embody the artist at one end, while he considers the role of a father figure, dedicated to the task at hand. Have a drink, spend a moment, think about time.

Documentation Action Research Collective (DARC) - Transformance

Tempting Failure 2018
Matthews Yard, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

Transformance is a radical new methodology in how live performance can be experienced, transformed and translated, employing a range of disciplines in an act of imaginative exchange between artist, witness/documenter, and a wider audience. This project aims to foster dynamic collaboration between diverse practices and to engage artists, spectators and researchers with the scope and innovation of performance documentation.

The project is based around a passion and interest in exploring what remains (and does not remain) of a performance, and in questioning the seeming contradictions between the ephemeral and the fixed. Through this project, the collective examines modes of subverting conventional expectations of performance documentation.

The collective will work with selected Tempting Failure artists prior to the festival in daylong processes of dialogue, performance, documentation and responses from multiple perspectives to the participating artists’ practice. DARC’s response to these practices will culminate into a live multifaceted installation.

A foundation does not have to be expensive to be good, but it is worth investing in. A good foundation is essential to smooth out and conceal irregularities. And then you have something, something to continue to build on, on and on. Cover it up and create new outlines. Stare yourself blind upon the most inconsiderable details, and watch them grow beyond recognition. I’m building a wall between us. To shut me in, to shut you out, in a desperate attempt just to be like everyone else. Soon my nose will be covered by pebbles and maybe it's just as good, because it still smells piss in the town by 1 o’clock in the morning.

Peter Eason Daniels - Cover Songs: The Sound Of A Record Sleeve

Tempting Failure 2018
The Spread Eagle, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

Yesterday by the Beatles has been credited as the most re-recorded and released song, by January 1986, 1,600 cover versions had been made. I will be playing the cover of the 45. Creating a document of the record itself.

Cover Songs: The sound of a record sleeve is a project looking at the relationship between object and sound as well as the process of forming a document. The project itself is the process of playing and recording the sound of 45” record cover or sleeve. Creating a new soundtrack that is intrinsically linked to both the physical record, its artwork and the music on that record. Through the use of a record player, the stylus can pick up sound from any surface, each one different, ‘playing’ all of the imperfections (gathered on the surface from use). This new sound track acts not only as abstract reproduction of the record itself, but as a historical document, a way of presenting the records own ‘personal’ history. It is the sound of the sleeve and it is individual to that record as well as how the record has been handled and who owned it.

Robin Bale - The Mural Crown

Robin Bale - The Mural Crown

Tempting Failure 2018
The Spread Eagle, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

An empty, spotlit space in the centre of the stage. In the shadows around it are some small domestic objects and home-made musical instruments. A large backdrop reads “l’etat, c’est moi” (“I am the state”). A figure is moving in the shadows, wrapped in blanket/robe scrawled with magical sigils and Dadaist graffiti, wearing a crown made in the form of a small castle. He makes small noises – scratching a drum, lightly shaking a maraca. The sounds get louder, words more coherent, snatches of sense emerge and strange instruments are played.

A disconcerting ritual is presented that physically and sonically explores a drastically unstable concept: ‘the Will of the People’. As well as a valediction to the welfare state and its purportedly inadequate subjects, the piece ambivalently alludes to Brexit, which has exposed longstanding fractures in ‘our’ body politic whilst presenting a fantasy of the nation-state (UK) as a kind of ideal, coherent, body; a unified territory and people. This is a denial that fracturing, agonism and incompletion are essential for liberal democracy to function.

The performance, moving between song, gutter poetry and surreal denunciation, treads a fine line between grotesque comedy and the intimidating bus stop wino, the tragic and the absurdly abject, exploring fantasies of personal and political wholeness with the intent to posit a competing vision, that of the abjected sovereign – the liberal-democratic rights-bearing subject, ‘client’ of the welfare state.

Tempting Failure 2018
Matthews Yard, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

A dancer. A soundscapist. A professor of Food Policy.

A cross channel swimmer’s feet encased in concrete – moving forward with difficulty – incessantly gesturing to the beats of an uplifting late 80’s, early 90’s Acid house soundtrack, interlaced with Professor Tim Lang’s continued discourse on the rise and fall of Britain’s food membership of the European Union over the past fifty years.

A pressing proclamation on Brexit’s effect on the food we consume and the free movement of people across borders.

A generation of smiley faced ☺ optimists crushed within their lifetime. To the New millennials We can only apologise.

Sad face ☹

We call on people to gather with us in Croydon, to read the day's newspapers together, to speak and to listen. This is what the papers say according to you, the news at The Spread Eagle. This is your chance to get some things off your chest, to have a rant, speak truth to power and really vent your spleen.

We will be newscasters casting out bad news, and we will exorcise the day’s concerns through the curative power of post-punk noise.

In these troubled times of uncertainty and division, Uninvited Guests return to their 2012 show Make Better Please and rework it with Bristol band Oh, The Guilt.

Uninvited Guests originally collaborated with Oh, The Guilt on Breaking News as part of Sanctum, Theaster Gates' first public project in the UK.

In a totally dark room, a performer will attempt to construct 40 electrical lights in 4 hours using only match light as they connect bulbs, wires and plugs.

When each light is finished it is plugged into a socket that is operated by an electrical timer switch. After four hours the switch will activate and the space will be illuminated. The illumination correlates to the performers success and ability to perform the task. Darkness denotes a failure of the task.

Over three hours KUBOV (Jess Aslan and Emma Lloyd) and their robot erode and rebuild material remixed from Matthew Sergeant’s bet denagel. KUBOV read from a constantly shifting mobile score, fuelled with sounds found in the various districts of Sergeant’s indeterminate piece for detuned baroque violin. The mobile score reflects a self regulating system managed by the tangled robot, which is continuously pushing towards balance and harmony in the space. Unfortunately for the robot, this is not to be, as the sound environment can’t be predicted and so the system pushes towards chaos as much as order.

The Villages sets the conditions for an intimate encounter. It’s a request, an experiment, a proposal. It highlights the connection that is created in subversive and explicit power dynamics and the physical actions that accompany them. The piece offers an alternative intimacy that can be experienced in and through a specific frame. The Villages explores what happens when BDSM practices are carried out in a public performative setting; when we deal with our bodies as they are in the present.

After a childhood filled with insufficient explanations about what has happened in Chernobyl and, later, many years of struggle against a system that enforces nuclear power and other operations of vast destruction with a violent police apparatus and biased media, GRM has been still angry. Frustrated after the apparently desired incidents in Fukushima, GRM started to embrace a cynical resignation, that culminated into the series POLLUTANT by the live electronic project COLDSORE.

It is a sonic meditation on mankind's destructive ignorance. GRM uses mostly handmade sound-generators and -manipulators to project mentally into the steam-filled cooling towers of ancient NPPs all over the globe. Following the traces of serial failures, floating amid the H2O molecules that have just touched the radioactive cores of great dreams. We want to fly free like the original CLOUD, then rain down to bless the world.

The prefix un-.
Added to nouns, adjectives, participles, verbs, adverbs, and their derivatives.
Denoting the absence, reversal or cancellation of a quality, state or action.
Deprivation, separation or reduction to a lesser state.
A lack. Not.

Charging words with opposite force, the prefix un- turns everything inside-out and upside-down. It changes the positive into negative, the negative into positive. Un- is deeply transformative. It un-does, un-makes, un-breaks.

UNNEGATIVE invokes these powers as an incantation. Somewhere between sculpture and dance, this ritual-action-piece clumsily reaches towards the light, forever trying to overcome. UNNEGATIVE is about guilt and forgiveness, about shame and acceptance, and ultimately, about redemption.

Push an ever-growing work exploring the artist’s experience of receiving chemotherapy and having a stemcell transplant for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The work has been evolving since June 2017.

Over an 18-hour period artist Sarah Davis will be working in situ documenting and archiving the medical ephemera she has collected over the past year and a half and transforming these objects into plaster artefacts.

The work functions as a landscape of trauma, it sits on the floor so the audience views it from above, tracing the narrative suggested by each pill packet. It is a cathartic work that addresses themes of survival, unfairness and the burden of ill health.

An infinite variety of colors, textures and shapes, patterns and imperfections - sometimes beautifully frightening - are transformed into digital information producing live generative sounds and visuals, in the synergy of the random movement of my hand.

Nurture presents motherhood as a durational performance and as an act of love and labor. In the role of the archetypal Mother, the artist offers her empathy and her breasts to the audience in an intimate, one-on-one interaction.

Breasts are maternal and erotic symbols, representing the conflicting roles of Madonna and Whore. In either role, the female body is a body that does not belong entirely to itself. By publicly performing the private act of breastfeeding, Nurture makes visible unacknowledged maternal labor, confronts social taboos concerning the female body, and exposes the competing demands fracturing women’s identities.

Following IN//Footsteps OF is an observation of the resistance that is experienced between fragmented parts of the self. Like the body itself, the performative space is autonomous, evolving through time and action. It is an attempt to understand what is a personal experience/way of being, and what is inherited through familial and societal expectation. Through installACTION, ideas of the female and inherited roles of the feminine are confronted. The roles of mother, sister, daughter, artist, etc. are considered alongside notions of feminine function and fertility. Where does my performance of societal labels end and my true embodiment of being a woman, mother, artist begin?

Tempting Failure 2018

Photographer: Julia Bauer

“…it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to out-carol the lark and the nightingale.” The Thorn Birds, Colleen McCullough, (2013).

In the cultural and sound based performance, ‘Erškėtis’ combines the voices of three generations of Lithuanian women in the family (Vilma Pranaitytė, Vida Valentina Pranaitienė and Orinta Pranaitytė) together with an endurance strength performance. The piece concerns immigration; the improvement of a personal situation and one’s conceptions of the ‘other’. As the core of the body balances its weight at height, it overcomes physical and mental challenges, whilst reflecting on our sacrifices in life.

[A myriad of crystallized emotions, orphaned whisperings and fragmented gestures]

The performance series BLIND DATES WITH THE HISTORY OF MANKIND, as a multi-sensory work, searches for a common ground between sensual bewilderment and political commentary, challenging the constructed nature of our ideas on progress and memory, derived from our social and cultural circumstances.

There are crypts, sarcophagi of mummified memories within our bodies, often located just near the solar plexus. Sizes vary and metamorphosize. How does one release these into being and remember the essence of oneself?

Tempting Failure 2018
Matthews Yard, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

An interactive performance for 5 people at a time.

Audience-participants are invited to join Daniel and Frauke in a series of awkwardly intimate and strange actions, rituals, dances, games, and other dysfunctional activities brought back in time from a post-neurodivergent revolution family fun-time future.

Daniel is dyspraxic and is too slow. Frauke has ADHD and is too quick. They are married and have kids. This interactive performance is rooted in their experiences of their bodies as neurodivergent lovers, parents, and weirdo performance makers. It is a space in which clunky experiences of bodies and actions can be discussed, explored and ultimately celebrated through ritualisation and play.

Weeks & Whitford - Insult To Injury

Tempting Failure 2018
Matthews Yard, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

In this new performance commissioned by Tempting Failure 2018 Weeks & Whitford will continue their autobiographical approach and ritualize a response to a recent period of illness, mourning, estrangement and survival that has pushed them to their limits.

Asserting life and love with its many difficulties, kinks and complications over grief, disability, addiction, and fear this complex durational work reflects an ongoing process of disintegration, renewal and transformation. The work is a rite or a prayer because, at points, performance is all we have.

Mehmet Sander - EMERGENCY

Mehmet Sander - EMERGENCY

Tempting Failure 2018
The Front Room, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

A new work by the renowned action-architect Mehmet Sander, in collaboration with workshop participants who work in the NHS and mental health sectors.

The piece will be devised over 2 days with non-dancers in free workshops open only to those in the health and care professions.

"I really want to work with NHS nurses and staff because for me they are the most disciplined, resilient, hard-working people. These are the qualities one must have to execute my work." - Mehmet Sander

Mehmet Sander’s work challenges people's habitual ideas of what a dance should be like. Associating his pieces more closely to the fields of architecture and physics rather than performance and music, Sander’s dance is about movement, space and time, explored through collaboration with physical forces such as gravity, inertia and velocity. Sander’s work aims to provoke thought and push boundaries, reflecting reality rather than offering an escape from it.

Tempting Failure 2018
Braithwaite Hall, Croydon
Photographer: Julia Bauer

Inspired by London and its urban aesthetics and realities, Shattered Urban Soundscape is a live-performed experimental sonic piece accompanied by visuals.

The work is created employing software and hardware synths, drum machines and samplers, featuring abundant personally sourced field recordings and footage. It draws on influences from UK electronic music in order to generate a sonic artefact of fragmented beats, dark, ambient and noisy atmospheres, rich deep bass and strangely familiar conceptual references to city experience. The visual side enhances the listeners’ immersion, guiding their attention towards the notions inspiring the music, through abstract and glitchy urban imagery.
